About our Classes

We offer a wide variety of aerial and circus classes at Air Temple Arts. Whether you have a driving interest to learn the circus arts, or want to add variety to your current workout, we have something for you!

Circus classes offer a full body workout, focusing on gaining both strength and flexibility in equal measure. Circus classes also have the added benefit of helping you train towards specific skill-based goals as opposed to a number of reps.

Aerial Fabric Class Levels:

100 Level (Introductory): This level is for students  who are brand new to aerials, or who are still working on getting comfortable with aerial equipment. Students in this level may not yet be able to climb the fabric or invert on the apparatus without significant help from the instructor. 100 Level classes are for gaining familiarity and comfort with aerial equipment, and  learning how your body works in space.


150 Level (Beginner): 
This level is for students who are able to climb the fabrics and perform foot locks either on the ground or from a climb. Lyra/trapeze students should be comfortable with knee hangs, sitting based poses and inverting from the ground without instructor’s assistance, but with the aid of jumping or their feet if necessary. Students in this level have either completed level 100 at ATA, or have had basic instruction elsewhere, and have the basic body strength necessary for aerial arts. 150 level classes are for learning more complex poses, learning to invert on the fabric, and learning ‘core’ principles of aerial work.


200 Level (Intermediate): 
This level is for students who are comfortable inverting with minimal ‘cheating’. Fabric students should be comfortable with climbing, performing footlock from several climbs, and climbing into a hip key from a same side knee hook. Trapeze students should be comfortable with knee hang beats and forward rolls. 200 level classes are for learning to invert comfortably in the air, building stamina, as well as basic dives and rolls.

300 Level (Intermediate/Advanced): This level is for students who are comfortable with being in the air and performing short sequences easily. Students should need no assistance to invert in the air, and should be familiar with with drops and dynamic movements. 300 level classes are for learning to create choreography, learning complex drops and sequences, and building greater strength, stamina and flexibility.

400+ Level (Advanced):

This level is for advanced students looking to hone their craft. In this level we will be working on new and exiting drops, complex sequences, a-typical entries for skill we already know. We’ll be working to gain a greater understanding of why fabric works the way it does so in order to build towards greater (and safe) creative freedom.

Lyra/Trapeze/Sling Class Levels: 

Lyra/Sling Level 1 (Introductory):

This level is for students  who are brand new to aerials, or who are still working on getting comfortable with aerial equipment. Students in this level may not yet be able to invert on the apparatus without significant help from the instructor. 100 Level classes are for gaining familiarity and comfort with aerial equipment, and learning how your body works in space.

Lyra/Sling Level 2 (Beginner):

This level is for students who are able to invert onto the apparatus, or pull over into front balance without instructor assistance. Students in this level have either completed level 1 at ATA, or have had basic instruction elsewhere, and have the basic body strength necessary for aerial arts. Level 2 classes are for learning more complex sequences and poses, learning basic momentum skills and top of the bar movements, or basic drops on sling, and building strength and technique for sustained work off the ground.

Lyra/Sling Level 3 (Intermediate):

This level is for students who can invert onto the apparatus, and pull over into a front balance without jumping, swinging, or tagging. Students should be able to hold a front balance without using their hands, and invert to the top bar, or from the belly of the sling without feet. Level 3 classes are for learning more complex rolls, beginning dynamic movement such as beats from hanging, and more complex sequencing, drops, and strength skills.

Lyra/Sling Level 4 (Intermediate/Advanced):

This level is for students who are comfortable in the air and performing short sequences easily. Students should be comfortable with beats, a variety of rolls and drops, single knee hangs, and back balances. Level 4 is for creating original choreography, learning more skills that require greater technique, strength, and flexibility, and working towards a solid understanding of aerial theory.

Advancement Criteria:

Advancement to the next level of classes is at the discretion of the instructor. To advance to the next class level, students should be able to easily complete any sequences they have learned in a level without verbal coaching from the instructor. Additional qualifications based on strength, stamina, flexibility and mental clarity will also be taken into consideration when deciding what level class students should be enrolled in.

Class levels are based on skills, progressions, and concepts that students must master before moving on to the next level. One session does not equal one level. Many students will spend several sessions in one level or another; everyone moves at a different pace, and a lack of advancement does not mean you’re not learning!
